Matthew Greer

Assistant Professor
College of Liberal Arts, School of Anthropology, Sociology, and Political Science / Department of Anthropology
Ph.D. Syracuse University, 2022 / MA University of Southern Mississippi 2014 / BA University of Mary Washington 2009

Why did I choose SIU: I chose SIU for two reasons. First, I have long been impressed with SIU’s anthropology program, and I was incredibly excited about the opportunity to join such a highly regarded department. My second reason for choosing SIU is the diversity of the student body, including the large number of first-generation students. Diversity is central to anthropology, as our research focuses on the variety of worldviews and ways of living human beings have developed. Studying this diversity in ways that are relevant to modern society requires anthropologists to draw from different perspectives, and the best way of achieving this is to have anthropologists from diverse backgrounds who can point out blind spots  and gaps in one another’s research. In short, I believe that increasing diversity in anthropology is critically important to ensuring that the field continues to be relevant in the 21st century and beyond. Teaching at SIU allows me to work with first-generation students and students from other diverse backgrounds who can shape the future of anthropology in the years to come.
