- provide visionary leadership for the College in the spirit of shared governance
- enhance and support quality academic undergraduate and graduate programs and research activities and related infrastructure

- demonstrated leadership experience in higher education administration at the level of school director or other academic leadership position of similar responsibility
- experience in budget development and implementation, faculty engagement for planning purposes, management of personnel, review of tenure and promotion applications and experience with program assessment and review

- Providing leadership to advance the law school's mission, including leveraging current resources to position SIU Simmons Law School advantageously within the changing landscape of legal education and law practice.
- Serving as a member of the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Deans' Council.
- Participating in and representing the law school at university-wide activities.
- Contributing to university-wide initiatives proposed from the office of the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
- Serving as chief administrative officer of the law school, which includes responsibility for:
- Managing the school's finances, including development and implementation of the budget.
- Continuing a strong fundraising record.
- Supervising, evaluating, and promoting the advancement and well-being of the school's personnel and students, as well as fostering a collaborative sense of community within the school.
- Developing institutional advancement and serving as the law school's liaison to a variety of outside constituencies, including the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the university, alumni, the bar, Carbondale, Southern Illinois, the state, and the legal academy.
- Providing leadership to advance the University's mission of promoting inclusive excellence, cultural and professional competency, and diversity.
- Enhancing and inspiring an academic climate that will foster excellence in teaching, research, and scholarly activity, including intellectual property development, and service.
- Developing and supporting programs and student services for the recruitment, retention, advisement, and placement of a diverse body of students.
- Responding promptly and effectively to the needs of students.
- In a spirit of shared governance, assuring that the affairs of the law school are conducted in accordance with all relevant federal and state statutes, regulations, directives of the Illinois Board of Higher Education, ABA and other relevant accreditation standards, by-laws and decisions of the SIU Board of Trustees, University policies, and the School of Law's operating papers.
- A J.D. or equivalent degree from a nationally accredited law school and qualifications meriting appointment to the rank of full Professor with tenure in the School of Law, including an outstanding record as a teacher and scholar.
- Administrative experience, preferably at the law-school level, including experience with administrative responsibilities, such as: budget, planning, personnel, student matters, promotion and tenure review, and/or substantially similar matters.
- Demonstrated experience with fundraising, or an ability to develop and implement successful fundraising programs.
- Commitment to academic values, including excellence in teaching and research, academic freedom, and university and community service by those within the law school.
- Commitment to providing quality legal education at a small, student-centered, public law school, apparent from facility with and/or respect for, but not limited to, data-driven decision making, best pedagogical practices, emerging education theory and methods, and ethics of the legal profession which includes an awareness of proven methodology; the ethics of the profession; and new trends and ideas.
- Commitment to diversity and inclusiveness in the faculty, staff, and student body, and transparency in administration.

Two candidates for the Associate Provost for Student Success will meet with constituents for open forums on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 through Wednesday, July 10, 2024.
The candidates will discuss “How to Build a Climate of Student Success in Higher Education Today.” A Q&A will follow each of the presentations.

Southern Illinois University Simmons Law School invites nominations and applications for the next Dean. We seek a dynamic, experienced leader with a demonstrated understanding of legal education, institutional growth and development, and the current and future challenges facing law schools.
SIU Simmons Law is a small regional public law school with a strong past and bright future. We just celebrated our 50th anniversary, successfully completed our ABA reaccreditation site visit, and received a $10 million gift. Our students have experienced many successes too, including winning a national moot court competition two years in a row. We are looking for a Dean who will capture the moment of these successes and guide us into the future.
